Bangladesh 2.5% Government Remittance Incentive: Complete Guide
Updated 5 April 2026
What Is the 2.5% Remittance Incentive?
The Bangladesh government offers a 2.5% cash incentive on all inward remittances sent through formal (legal) channels. If you send the equivalent of 100,000 BDT to Bangladesh, your recipient actually receives 102,500 BDT. The extra 2,500 BDT comes directly from the government — at no cost to the sender or receiver. This program was introduced to encourage the use of formal banking and licensed transfer services instead of informal channels (hundi/hawala).
Who Is Eligible?
The incentive is broadly available to the Bangladeshi diaspora:
- ✓Bangladeshi nationals working abroad on work visas
- ✓Bangladeshi students studying overseas
- ✓Permanent residents and citizens living abroad
- ✓Both sender and recipient must be individuals (not businesses)
- ✓The transfer must come through a licensed, formal channel
- ✓There is no minimum amount — the incentive applies to all transfer sizes
How to Claim the Incentive
In most cases, the incentive is applied automatically — you don't need to do anything special:
- ✓1. Send money through any licensed provider (Wise, Remitly, WU, TapTap Send, etc.)
- ✓2. The transfer arrives at your recipient's bank account, bKash, or Nagad
- ✓3. The 2.5% bonus is added automatically by the receiving bank or MFS provider
- ✓4. For bank accounts: the incentive typically appears within 1-3 business days
- ✓5. For bKash/Nagad: may appear as a separate credit from the bank
Documentation Requirements
The documentation needed depends on the transfer amount:
- ✓Under 500,000 BDT: No documentation required. The incentive is auto-applied.
- ✓Over 500,000 BDT: The beneficiary (recipient) needs to submit documentation to their bank.
- ✓Required docs for large transfers: Valid NID, proof of relationship to sender, bank statement
- ✓The sender does not need to submit any extra documentation regardless of amount
Which Providers Auto-Apply the Incentive?
All major licensed providers automatically apply the 2.5% incentive. Your recipient gets the bonus regardless of which service you use, as long as it's a formally licensed channel:
- ✓Wise — auto-applied to bank, bKash, and Nagad transfers
- ✓Remitly — auto-applied to all delivery methods
- ✓TapTap Send — auto-applied; confirmed on their support page
- ✓Western Union — auto-applied, but limited to wage earners with valid work visas
- ✓WorldRemit — auto-applied to bank, cash pickup, and mobile money
- ✓MoneyGram — auto-applied at no extra cost
- ✓XE — auto-applied to eligible recipients
- ✓Ria — auto-applied to bKash and bank transfers
- ✓Sendwave — auto-applied to eligible recipients
Common Problems and Solutions
Sometimes the incentive doesn't appear as expected. Here's what to check:
- ✓Incentive delayed — it can take 1-3 business days to appear separately from the main transfer
- ✓Not received at all — confirm the transfer came through a licensed formal channel (not hawala)
- ✓bKash/Nagad — the incentive may show as a separate transaction from Bangladesh Bank
- ✓Wrong amount — the 2.5% is calculated on the BDT amount received, not the amount sent
- ✓Western Union restriction — WU requires the sender to be a wage earner with a valid work visa
- ✓Contact the receiving bank — if the incentive hasn't appeared after 5 business days, your recipient should contact their bank
How the Incentive Affects Your Total Value
The 2.5% incentive effectively improves every provider's exchange rate by 2.5%. This means even a provider with a slightly worse exchange rate can deliver more taka than you expect. When comparing providers on Beshii, we include the incentive in the "total received" amount so you see the real value your recipient gets.
Is the Incentive Permanent?
The Bangladesh government has renewed this incentive program multiple times. As of 2026, it remains active with no announced end date. The program has strong political support because it encourages formal remittance channels, which helps the country's foreign exchange reserves. However, governments can change policies — always verify the current rate before sending.
